Visit the Lafayette Cemetery
You wouldn’t think of cemeteries as a traditional attraction, but because there are so many of them in New Orleans, and because of the haunted nature of the city, you can’t miss out on wandering at least one cemetery (and hopefully catching some ghost stories) when you visit.
Locals told us that because the city is built on what is essentially swamp land, traditional, underground burials are rare. Instead, the dead are put to rest in mausoleums. If you can get somebody to tell you how the mausoleums work, even better.
The Lafayette Cemetery is an amazing, old cemetery with some beautiful, eerie mausoleums in the Garden district of NOLA. It’s right across the street from a famous restaurant, Commander’s Palace, and there are some fascinating burial spots in the cemetery.
